Sleep by Andy Warhol

Creative Production

New York, NY 2023

Across two nights (December 1st and 2nd, 2023, at 7pm), the Film-Makers’ Cooperative hosted a benefit screening of Andy Warhol’s first major film, SLEEP (1963), inside The Bunker (222 Bowery), the long-term home of its star, John Giorno.

Sleep, a monumental work of experimental cinema, will be shown on the occasion of its 60th anniversary as it often was in the early 1960s (and has rarely been so since) with a pop music soundtrack. This is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to see and engage with one of the great achievements of experimental film in a truly unique environment.

In addition to being Giorno’s home, The Bunker was also home to the beat icon William Burroughs, who christened the space and whose bedroom remains preserved there. Over the years the historic 222 Bowery housed the studios of Fernand Leger, James Brooks, Mark Rothko, Regina Bogat, Wynn Chamberlain, Brion Gysin, Michael Goldberg, and Lynn Umlauf.
